Almeida Garrett Municipal Library

The Almeida Garrett Municipal Library, located in the Crystal Palace Gardens (Porto), is an information and recreation space devoted to the promotion of books and reading among audiences of all ages. Inaugurated on April 2, 2001, the library was designed by the architect José Manuel Soares and built for the Porto 2001 European Cultural Capital event. The architectural quality of the building and its privileged environment, in the beautiful and surrounding Gardens of the Crystal Palace, are factors of great attraction for visitors.

Also part of this complex are an auditorium and an exhibition gallery. The Auditorium of Almeida Garrett Library, with capacity for 200 people, has the most modern sound, projection and lighting equipment. It has hosted numerous activities organized by various institutions, from theatre festivals and film series to lectures, book presentations, poetry sessions, music shows, conferences and professional meetings. The Auditorium of Almeida Garrett Library will be the venue for the first day of DSAI’2012 (July 19, 2012).

Douro River Hotel Ship

The Douro River Hotel Ship is one of the newest cruise ships to sail the Douro River providing accommodation for all of DSAI’2012 participants. Spacious lounges and guest areas offer an inviting and inclusive atmosphere. The hotel cruise ship also includes a panoramic restaurant and a bar where the on-cruise conference sessions will be held and where participants can, afterwards, discuss the conference activities. For an end-of-day relaxation, participants can take in the gorgeous scenery on the Sun Deck and enjoy the available swimming pool and whirlpools.

Douro Hotel Cruise Ship

As for accommodations, the Douro River Hotel Ship offers double cabins with 15 square meters (including balcony space on the Upper Deck cabins). All cabins are external. Those on the Upper Deck have a private balcony, whereas those on the Main Deck have large, non-opening panoramic windows. All cabins feature shower and toilet, their own air-conditioning controls, hair dryer, safe, music channel and satellite TV. They are furnished with either a double bed or two single beds, which can be put together to form a double.

Douro River Hotel Ship will be the main venue of DSAI’2012, hosting various types of events, scientific and social, such as paper sessions, posters presentations and peer networking sessions. The cruise will set out from Vila Nova de Gaia/Porto and sail up all the way to Peso da Régua, thus linking to other locales hosting events in DSAI’2012 – Douro Museum and Alpendurada Monastery. The registration fee for DSAI’2012 also covers the price of the cruise and accommodation aboard the Douro River Hotel Ship. Douro Museum

The Douro Museum, located at Peso da Régua, North of Portugal, was created in 1997. It represents the memory, culture and identity of the wine region of Douro, World Patrimony. It aims to display information related to the region with the same name, around the Douro river, and help on it’s development. The actions taken pass through registry, study and act on the tissue of the Douro region. Douro Museum provides their visitors different services, such as museology, educational services and a documentation centre.

Douro Museum

The Museum’s building was born from the rehabilitation of one of the most emblematic houses of the Douro region history: the House of Companhia Velha. In the centre of the building there is a courtyard, the Exhibition Area, where all attention converge. The restaurant “A Companhia”, the Shop, the Archive, the Library, the Reading Room and the Wine Bar overlooking the Douro river, are in the area around the Exhibition Area. Adjacent to this building there is a block of modern architecture lined with panels of black shale, where is the Educational Service.

From July 20 afternoon until July 21, DSAI’2012 sessions will take place in the Douro Museum.

Alpendurada Monastery

The Alpendurada Monastery, also called Benedito Convent, dates from the first half of the XII century. After years and several restore processes the monastery is today a luxurious hotel, located 2km distance from Alpendurada and Matos. In addition to the Convent there are also fifteen restored houses, originally built by the Beneditos.

The convent lounges have Roman and Moorish influences. The furniture and chandeliers date from the XVII and XVIII centuries and the rare collection of restored carriages are part of the legacy of the convent.

In the broad terrain that surrounds the monastery, beyond the natural landscape, there are fitness circuits, swimming pools, tennis courts and a river beach.

The medieval environment combined with the beautiful views for the Douro river make this place special, that can be appreciated in the third day of DSAI’2012, during the conference dinner.
